Kansas City Cake Smash Photo Session

The Client

It seems like Elliot was just in our Blue Springs studio for his newborn session yesterday and here we are for his long-awaited smash cake session. He still has that sweet little baby face with great big eyes and full, squishy cheeks. It’s been so fun to see his family every few months this year and he has surely kept us entertained at his sessions.

First We Have a Series of Portraits

He did great for each section of his one-year session. He participated in posing by showing the camera how he can stand up while holding on to things. He fell in love with my little red chair, which was just his size. So cute. I love overalls on boys. His are by OshKosh.

He Smashes

When mom sat that cake in front of him it was the funniest thing I have seen in a while. Elliot was hysterical with this cake. We captured so many conflicting emotions during his little cake smash.

“Oh, there is cake on my hands.”
“Wow, cake on my belly.”
“I’m blowing kisses in the air over this cake deliciousness.”
“Get this cake away from me.”
“It’s too close, I think it might want to eat ME.”
“I’ll try it again.”
“Nope, nope, take it away, I tell you!”

One second, he was curious. The next, the cake was not allowed in a 3-foot radius of him. I think we laughed so hard that there were tears.

Interested in a cake smash session for your baby? We can create them to be simple or with a little posh. The price is included in any baby session, so you will have classic one-year portraits for your wall and sometimes moms like to create a cake smash album so they can remember this special time, commemorating the first year with an heirloom the family will treasure for years to come. See details here.

    Meet Aubrey

    The

    My First Newborn of 2015

Welcome to 2015! I have been a Kansas City newborn photographer for eight whole years now. Excited for this upcoming year of business. I have a lot of blogging to catch up on from 2014, but I just couldn’t wait to post the first newborn from 2015! I had a busy Christmas season in the studio and took a few weeks for family time over Christmas break. Lots of cookies were made, (and eaten), many Legos were built. If anyone has a good system to organize Legos, let me know. I have the relegated to the playroom. There is a shelf, there are containers. Now what? LOL.

    The Teeny Client

I had the pleasure of being little Aubrey’s newborn photographer. She had so much hair and these rosy, pink cheeks.  Just perfection. She was a little princess, down to her teeny toes and regal stature. I remember mom planned this one well in advance and came into the studio for a meeting before she was even showing! I love it when a mom is so excited about her baby and her session and likes to have everything planned, and in order, I was the same way.

    Backdrops and Props

Her mom brought a few things from her nursery. I love to coordinate wall portraits to go in the nursery! Her nursery is in pale pink and golds. Mom had a vision of a huge portrait over her bed we had in mind when planning the session. The thing I LOVED about decorating the nurseries in my home was executing that vision I had. The theme, the Pottery Barn details, creating wall art. When the baby is 3-4, then they are going to start begging you to put Dora or Spongebob decals on their walls, until then it can be pretty as a picture!

Happy New Year!  Very excited about fun things in store with the studio this year!

Melissa Pfannenstiel is a nationally published Kansas City newborn photographer based in Blue Springs, MO. In case you are in the process of securing your newborn session, take a look at what to expect.

    Mission Hills Newborn Photographer

The Tiny Client in Our Kansas City & Mission Hills Newborn Photography Studio

Those lips and the button nose.  Absolute perfection. She had lots of hair and delicate, tiny features I was excited that she fit into my teeny new basket, it is reserved for those under 7 lbs, which are few and far between lately. We’ve had a lot of bigger babies in the studio lately. She slept for her posed images and was awake for a wide-eyed series as well. Her nursery was decorated in elephants, so mom brought her elephant in for her room. I love the different patterns on that guy. Mom also brought in a blanket that a family member had made for their new little one. Such a fun session!

    The Backdrops & Props

Mom and dad were in black and gray, so we paired them with a black backdrop. I loved the texture in dad’s sweater. Sweaters give parent images a cozy feel, especially for those winter babies. A lot of times moms want a blouse or top that is looser and flowing, mixing textures with mom and dad works well. It is a warm 80 degrees in the studio, but the parent series only takes about 30 minutes max, so clients will change right after so they are comfortable for the rest of the session. We want everyone to be as comfortable as possible.

I used my cream flokita rug with this baby and the cream damask backdrop from Lemon Drops. This sweet little pink mohair hat fit her just perfect. I have a variety of newborn sized hats as every baby has a different sized head. Newborn boys are generally always larger, so I make sure to stock lots of options.

      Blue Springs Newborn Photographer

A little blog post from this newborn photographer. Rare, I know. Blogging is not my favorite. I like using my camera and working with my clients. I like seeing the results and getting that reaction from parents when they see their images for the first time. Blogging ranks up there with laundry. Right now, I have the blogging equivalent of twelve months of whites and 9 months of darks piled up in my laundry sorting area “aka my bed”. The children in the house have no clean pants.

      The Little Guy

Sharing a newborn from December.  Meet Morgan. Mom has an Etsy store for her hand-made baby ties, so I was excited when she brought one for Morgan to model. He looks like a happy, little ‘ole man in that last shot, undoubtedly dreaming about milk, cuddles and his adorable nursery that mom has decorated for him.

He had tons of wonderful, dark hair. I had to get a close-up of those sweet little lips.  I tend to get those macro shots at every newborn session.  They have this tiny peach fuzz on their little faces, the delicate lashes, itty-bitty toes and barely existent toenails.

      I am of the mind that those are things you want to remember forever. They are imprinted in your memory, how small and beautiful your child is a week after birth, but there really is nothing like an image to look back on when they are nine years old and stand almost to your shoulders.  {sniffle}
