Ryan’s mom contacted me the week of his birth looking for a photographer for her new guy’s newborn photo shoot in Kansas City. I was delighted that she choose my studio. As newborns are always coming early or late, my appointments are fluid. Please DO contact me even if you don’t see a date open to see to see we can work you in the schedule. I only take three per week in pre-booking, and if that week has babies who are overdue, I will have slots open up.

Ryan was just a bundle of cuteness. He’s a natural blonde, just like mama! He slept like an angel. Those cute little squishy cheeks!

The nursery

Mom sent me some images of his adorable nursery, with its rustic elements. He has little fox details all over it, so cute. If I had time, I would have ordered a little Fox from Etsy. Aren’t they adorable? The thing about plushes is that most are too big to include in portraits, so Etsy is a great place to look for handmade, more delicate items that you’re not going to put in the crib with the baby, but on a shelf. They look so sweet when baby cuddles them for portraits.

The Backdrops

For the parent series, mom and dad chose black. You just can’t go wrong with black. In fact, I used to shoot the parent series only on black for years.

Mom chose a darker backdrop for baby only with color tones similar to the wallpaper in his room. I love the gray mohair hat that he has on in the second image. It has such great texture. The hat in the third image is “Ellie the Elfkin” hat by a friend of mine who makes adorable baby things. You can find them on her Etsy page.

Jaime also wanted a lighter and airier look, so she picked the blue old-world style backdrop that has a muslin look. I paired that drop with a blue wooden box that I had found at the Brass Armadillo.

All of the blankets shown are my creations except for the gray!

Thank you for choosing the studio, Jaime! Expecting? See our investment and booking page to check our schedule!

Happy fall! This post is a bit all over the place. You are forewarned. When I was doing some search engine optimization with my site, I noticed I seem to be way down in rank for this keyword: “best kansas city newborn photos.” You have to mention keywords on your site and text to rank well. This is one of those phrases that are hard to use in context without it looking completely arrogant. I suppose I will integrate that into this post in a tongue and cheek way. If you are looking for a newborn photographer, see my blog post on how to find the best Kansas City newborn photographer for you!

Consequently, I am very behind in blogging but don’t think that I haven’t been shooting. For me, I like to catch up with blogging for the year in the winter when it is cold and a bit slower! The air is crisp and I am in the midst of the busy Kansas City family fall photography month. It would be so nice if our October lasted so much longer!

A bit of studio news, Captures in Time has a new website that I am loving. ProPhoto 6 has a new backend and some awesome sites you can start with. Super-easy to customize.

Funny story…I was editing this session and my husband came up to my computer and said, “Is that Hosmer?” I think I would have mentioned if he booked a newborn session. You can see the resemblance in the eyes! Salvador Perez has a new baby, according to Instagram, btw.

During his newborn session, Conner was such a cooperative little guy! Almost all the while, he was not fussy in the slightest and just a dream to work with. His mama was just gorgeous, too.

Now, I always talk about how black on black is my favorite color palette for the parent and newborn series in the session. Because it provides contrast with the skin tones when shot correctly the skin will just glow. New moms always have a glow anyway. Well, I just loved working these new parents, such a fun shoot! I hope you guys are enjoying your new home with your sweet little man!

Another Long-Time Captures in Time Client

This is the third newborn I have photographed for this GORGEOUS mama in the last nine years. I know her so well now, it feels like girl-time when we get together for shoots. There are always laughs.

Her little guy gave me lots of sleepy time and hilarious expressions. I adore his hair! All three of her babies have had tons of hair.

Cindy was one of my very first clients. We shot her first maternity session in her living room many years ago. I brought lights and backdrops. Her second maternity was done on their beautiful property in the country. She was a natural in front of the camera.

I have enjoyed photographing her other two children through the years at the studio and their ranch. We are blessed to have so many repeat clients return for Kansas City newborn pictures in the area. Take a peek at his baby brother’s newborn pictures from 2010.

The family has lots of show horses on their farm, so we always incorporate equestrian items into their newborn shoots to make them extra special. My clients are always welcome to bring their own treasures to their newborn shoot.

      Creating Heirlooms

Cindy has had me make coffee table books of all of her little ones. I have archived the layout and was able to pull it out for a new book for her. They are great keepsakes. We have to remember that in this day and age, we can’t hand down images on disks, data can deteriorate at any time. Prints are forever! I will always treasure the boxes of pictures my parents gave me when I moved out of my own. I hate the thought of children not being able to have something like that to treasure.

Kansas City Newborn Baby Photography – Meet Quinn

        The Consultation

Mom and dad set up a conference call with me when mom was in her second trimester. We discussed using a variety of angles and showing her sweet face from all directions because her sweet little face would be changing with upcoming surgeries. We really ended up doing a double set of most poses. Dad used to be a photographer in New York and said he did a lot of research to find someone to capture Quinn in her early days. Such a nice compliment.

        The Backdrops & Props

Quinn’s parents chose black. I love the contrast with mom’s hair. Some women are afraid that black will wash them out, but that is not the case with super soft, diffused lighting. The image with dad and Quinn nose to nose is just so emotional. Tugs at the heart strings for sure. For baby-only backdrops, mom chose my rose floral from Lemon Drops. It’s one of the most popular backdrops we carry for our newborn girl photo sessions. A petite little thing, she fit perfectly in my new vintage-style bucket. Mom chose light pink lace for our newborn series and I just over love this fabric. It provides texture and is not too overpowering for baby. Mom brought a sweet and simple bow for baby, which is always welcome. We do have many delicate headbands for our baby girls in every color imaginable for those who want to leave the accessories to us.
