Happy fall! This post is a bit all over the place. You are forewarned. When I was doing some search engine optimization with my site, I noticed I seem to be way down in rank for this keyword: “best kansas city newborn photos.” You have to mention keywords on your site and text to rank well. This is one of those phrases that are hard to use in context without it looking completely arrogant. I suppose I will integrate that into this post in a tongue and cheek way. If you are looking for a newborn photographer, see my blog post on how to find the best Kansas City newborn photographer for you!

Consequently, I am very behind in blogging but don’t think that I haven’t been shooting. For me, I like to catch up with blogging for the year in the winter when it is cold and a bit slower! The air is crisp and I am in the midst of the busy Kansas City family fall photography month. It would be so nice if our October lasted so much longer!

A bit of studio news, Captures in Time has a new website that I am loving. ProPhoto 6 has a new backend and some awesome sites you can start with. Super-easy to customize.

Funny story…I was editing this session and my husband came up to my computer and said, “Is that Hosmer?” I think I would have mentioned if he booked a newborn session. You can see the resemblance in the eyes! Salvador Perez has a new baby, according to Instagram, btw.

During his newborn session, Conner was such a cooperative little guy! Almost all the while, he was not fussy in the slightest and just a dream to work with. His mama was just gorgeous, too.

Now, I always talk about how black on black is my favorite color palette for the parent and newborn series in the session. Because it provides contrast with the skin tones when shot correctly the skin will just glow. New moms always have a glow anyway. Well, I just loved working these new parents, such a fun shoot! I hope you guys are enjoying your new home with your sweet little man!

Kansas City Newborn Baby Photography – Meet Quinn

    The Consultation

Mom and dad set up a conference call with me when mom was in her second trimester. We discussed using a variety of angles and showing her sweet face from all directions because her sweet little face would be changing with upcoming surgeries. We really ended up doing a double set of most poses. Dad used to be a photographer in New York and said he did a lot of research to find someone to capture Quinn in her early days. Such a nice compliment.

    The Backdrops & Props

Quinn’s parents chose black. I love the contrast with mom’s hair. Some women are afraid that black will wash them out, but that is not the case with super soft, diffused lighting. The image with dad and Quinn nose to nose is just so emotional. Tugs at the heart strings for sure. For baby-only backdrops, mom chose my rose floral from Lemon Drops. It’s one of the most popular backdrops we carry for our newborn girl photo sessions. A petite little thing, she fit perfectly in my new vintage-style bucket. Mom chose light pink lace for our newborn series and I just over love this fabric. It provides texture and is not too overpowering for baby. Mom brought a sweet and simple bow for baby, which is always welcome. We do have many delicate headbands for our baby girls in every color imaginable for those who want to leave the accessories to us.

Baby Photography Kansas City | Meet Colton

Oh my GOODness! My job creating baby photography in Kansas City doesn’t get much more fun than this. He could not have been any cuter for his “sitter” six-month session!  SO mellow and smiley. I met mom, dad and Colton at the studio. This baby was super relaxed and his red hair and gorgeous, blue eyes are so unique. After a few sets and outfits in the studio, we went outside to play for a little bit with mom and dad.

The six-month milestone is so much fun to document. As soon as they can sit up unassisted, make that call! For several reasons, I prefer the bulk of the six-month session to be in the studio. Parents are welcome to go outdoors with me after a couple of sets and we can get baby/family shots, giving you the best of both worlds for your session.

1.There are fewer distractions in the studio-

When you are outside and a car is driving by, they are very intent on following that car with their eyes. Especially boys, it begins early, this infatuation with vehicles. Outdoors there are many textures that your baby is not as familiar with. As a result, the baby will be exploring those and not glancing at the camera as frequently. Rather than competing with grass and concrete, I will have more of their attention in the studio.

      2. Better expressions-

Because the baby is much more comfortable being in a smaller space with mom and dad close by while sitting on their own than out in the “big world”. Also, the studio is the perfect temperature.

      3. The lighting is perfection-

Consequently, there is nothing like a studio session for maximizing clarity in a portrait. Studio lighting highlights huge eyes and facial features in a way the sun just doesn’t always do outside.

      4. Mom can help style the session, this is so much fun-

Most of all, moms have a blast coordinating sessions at this age by selecting backdrops from our “Style Your Session” website we give you access to after you schedule your appointment. A lot of times, mom will already have outfits selected. Almost always, this site will give you inspiration when you go shopping for your sitter-session! Take a peek at Nordstrom’s baby clothes. They are some of my favorites to photograph!

Thank you so much for bringing him, I hope to see you all again soon!

      Our Designated Cookie Holder

Miles could not have been any cuter. Such a sweet little face. Check out his Christmas cookies in his newborn photos. He had so much dark hair and the prettiest skin tone. No jaundice and no baby flakes. That kind of never happens around here. He slept super soundly and was an angel to work with. Mom and dad were so photogenic as well. When I saw the image of him on mom’s shoulder below, I just swooned. So precious. I surely could never get tired of my job.

      A Vision

Mom had this vision of using cookies and milk for a Christmas image, she wanted to do a Holiday card and birth announcement in one. Such a cute idea. She sent me an image from Pinterest and I immediately started thinking about how I could put my own twist on the idea. I liked the idea of shooting from above, almost like he was in his crib waiting for Santa. I thought about this antique cradle I have and went from there. This session got us all in the Christmas spirit. I came right home and started decorating for Christmas. I love getting to think outside the box with mom’s ideas to incorporate before sessions. This first image is my most “pinned” on Pinterest so far.

Sorry about the Chips Ahoy cookies that were used, Santa. At home, I promise we do better and you get the homemade stuff. It’s not that I’m lazy, I just felt like these cookies had more texture. And now, to bake 15 dozen cookies for the Christmas cookie exchange. 🙂
