Documenting Baby’s First Year | Kansas City
One of my favorite things is documenting baby’s first year with photographs. I believe the biggest changes in their appearance happen between the newborn session and three or four months. Each stage has its own characteristics that I like to capture.
The Newborn Stage
Everything is tiny. Tiny fingernails, hands, toes, ears, nose. I like to captures close-ups of all of those things. Babies are easiest to pose when they are sleeping, so most of these images will feature then snoozing away and looking content, but I like to capture some awake images as well, while they are swaddled up cozy.
The Three to Four-Month Stage
Some parents opt to add a three-month session to their one-year Tiny Toes plan. Since baby can’t sit up on his/her own, I get a little creative with getting shots with the baby alone. I have baskets and props which are larger for this age of the baby. We get lots of close-ups of their sweet faces while lying down on nice textures. They also smile back at the camera.
Most babies will be pushing up with their arms when you lie them on their belly. This is so cute to include in the gallery.
The Six to Seven Month Stage
Baby is sitting up well on their own by now and I feature this in the images. I will also have mom or dad help “stand them up” by holding onto their hands. They will have kinds of expressions by now. My clawfoot tub prop is popular for this age.
The One Year Stage
Baby is standing with help or on their own. They may be even taking their first steps. One-year-olds love to sit in my tiny vintage chairs. These make great photo opportunities. We always have mom and dad close by for safety, of course. May parents opt to have a smash cake at the first year session.

Little Elliot’s hair gets redder every time I see him for his Tiny Toes sessions! He was a strawberry blonde at his newborn session and now he matches mom’s gorgeous shade! He just has the sweetest face and disposition!
