Why is Custom Photography So Expensive | Kansas City

I ran across this piece regarding the difference between chain and custom portraiture by the talented Debra Weisheit.  She has an amazing way with words, I thought I would share it here.

I would like to add to this that any registered and legitimate business is paying 30-40% of profits for self-employment taxes.  There are also equipment & liability insurance, studio overhead, and professional association fees to consider.

I absolutely LOVE what I am doing.  After 17 years in business management, I can honestly say that I enjoy each and every hour I spend working.  I receive inquiries from people interested in starting a photography business every week.  It’s important to remember that every business should start with a business plan. It is, after all, a business.

There are unfortunate misconceptions between the chain, the true small business and the “person with a camera who shoots, burns and pockets it all”. Thanks, Debra, for writing this piece.
